Monthly Roundup for August 2019

Holt Trophy

The final of the Holt Trophy, the new Thursday evening drawn triples league, was held on Thursday 15th August.  The top 2 teams from each league played each other with 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th also playing against each other.

Congratulations to the team of Ian Wingar, Roger Kettle, David Cotter and Adele Smith who emerged as overall winners.  Many thanks to all those who supported the League and also to all the substitutes who stepped in at often very short notice.

Vince Cooper

The 2nd leg of the Vince Cooper shield was played against Mersea Island on Thursday 8th August.  West Mersea had a 9 shot lead from the first leg and the match was eagerly anticipated by all concerned.  On a sunny afternoon, the 2 sides met and eventually, in spite of a valiant effort by Colin Vinter’s team, West Mersea triumphed with an overall 25 shot lead and retain the shield for another year.  The best winning rink was Malcolm Cameron, Bill Wyatt led by skip Ewen Cairns.  After the game, the players retired to the lounge for a well-earned supper prepared by Lorna Veitch and her team.

Caribbean Drive

The Caribbean Drive was held on a sunny afternoon in spite of earlier forecasts of rain.  The members played 3 games of 6 ends each.  It was strange to see so many colours on the green and thank you to all those who made the effort to dress up including our Rastafarian friend who had great difficulty in keeping his dreadlocks under control.  The winning rink was Chris Marchington, Eileen Joslin and Jenny Young.  The match ended with a delicious Caribbean themed supper.

Monthly Roundup for July 2019

24 Bowlers enjoyed a day's bowling in the Mixed Pairs Day held on Sunday 7 July.  Perfect bowling weather, slightly cloudy, warm and a light breeze.  Experienced bowlers were paired with the lesser experienced (some having only joined a month ago) giving the newer bowlers an insight into competitive bowling but in an informal atmosphere.

Three games of 8 ends were played with a coffee break and lunch in between, points being given for games won or drawn.  Only one couple managed to win all 3 games, Ewan Cairns and Nicky Woodward (a very new bowler who improved immensely as the day wore on) and were worthy winners. Runners Up were David Jones and Anne Godfrey with 2 wins and a draw and third place was decided on shot difference as both couples won 2 games each, Jenny Young with Richard Parker and Annette Oakley with David Cotter.

A relaxed day of bowling, allowing bowlers to share their experience with newer bowlers both on the green and afterwards in the lounge bar.

Monthly Roundup for May 2019

The first friendly we have been able to play was against Tiptree Jobserve. The weather was intermittent but we managed to complete all 18 ends.  Although we didn’t have quite enough players for 4 teams, Tiptree kindly brought more players to make up another rink.  West Mersea won overall by a narrow margin; the winning rink was Harvey Bernstein, Bob (borrowed from Tiptree) skipped by Mike Scully.

The men’s first game was at home against Arclight played in terrible rain.  The miserable evening wasn’t helped by Arclight winning by 2 rinks to one.  Well guys, at least things can only improve.

The ladies’ County matches have begun in earnest beginning with the triples and pairs.

Sue Howard, Jenny Young and Sandra Cairns unfortunately lost their triples by one shot on the last end against a team from Dovercourt  but both Annette Oakley and Rita Ager and Sue Howard and Sue Sargeant won their pairs and will meet in the next round.  Good luck to all ladies in your County matches.
